Why An Old Chimney Breast Often Looks Damp

Decades of burning coal or wood in an open fireplace deposits tar, soot and combustion by-products in the surrounding masonry – including chloride and nitrate salts. Once a fireplace stops being used, those salts don’t go anywhere. They stay in the brickwork and plaster, sometimes for decades.

What Hygroscopic Salts Actually Are

“Hygroscopic” means moisture-absorbing. Unlike the white, fluffy efflorescence you can sometimes see on a wall surface, hygroscopic salts are invisible – they sit within the plaster or masonry and pull moisture directly out of humid air.

Salt-contaminated plaster can give a damp reading on a moisture meter, and can even feel damp to the touch, purely because it’s pulling moisture from the air – with no leak, no rising damp and no penetrating damp involved at all.

This is exactly why chimney breast damp so often gets mis-treated: injecting a new damp-proof course, or replacing a roof flashing that was never actually the problem, does nothing if the real cause is salt contamination left behind by an old fireplace.
